Justin Martin

Kura Careniup

The art piece created for Karrinyup is a vivid description of the land using blue and turquoise for the coastline, whilst greens and yellows for the lake lands.

Traditional Nyungar line work was formally done by the men to give connection to country. We all have a connection to country which is shown within the centre point of the artwork. This piece has been designed to show the central location of Karrinyup Shopping Centre, with the linework as a guide including the lake and the coastline.

Justin's vision for the project was to create an artwork that reflects the traditional values of this area with eye catching, paired with an interactive mirror sheet metal that represents the glisten of the summer sun.

ABOUT JUSTIN MARTIN

Justin Martin is an established Wadjuk artist and Cultural Advisor from Boorloo Boodja, Perth Western Australia.

Justin’s art is based around cultural and traditional knowledge, history, facts and creation stories that are hundreds of years old. His traditional techniques and stories have been passed down from his grandmothers, prominent Nyungar elder Theresa Walley (dec) and well known Indigenous artist Joan Martin (dec).

Growing up in Karrinyup Justin spend his childhood at Gwelup Lake interacting with native flora and fauna on a daily basis. Living so close to the beach he would often make trips down to Trigg and Mettams Pool during the hot summers and go bike riding through the off-road tracks, dunes and hills.
